BAD TACTICS can get you killed, as man who has silhouetted himself in doorway is about to learn the easy way, receiving a stream of Simunitions™ “bullets” during force on force drill.
Wrong Hardware, Bad Tactics
Having the best equipment to do a job is important. Knowing the best way to do the job is even more important. So it is with home defense. I want the most effective hardware…but I’ve learned that the best tactics are even more important.
Grabbing your gun and maybe your flashlight and going looking for the bad guy seems to be the intuitive thing to do…but it’s not the smart thing to do! In Case Seven, a tough old lady out west determined that there was an intruder in her house. She called the police – doin’ fine so far – but then, she got her home defense handgun out of its hiding place and went looking for the bad guy herself.
She had made her way to the front door about the time the cops were pulling up outside. They had been dispatched to a possible home invasion, and what they were thinking was, “dangerous person with a gun, there now.” They then saw the elderly lady silhouetted in the doorway, with a conspicuous gun in her hand.
They screamed, “Police! Drop the gun!” She turned toward the sound, and the gun turned with her. The figure in the doorway was now quickly turning toward them with a gun pointing in their direction.
What would you have done, in their shoes? Well, that’s exactly what the cops did. They opened fire…and the lady died in her own doorway.
Once you have called the police to an emergency scene such as this, you have declared the arena to be theirs! If you then enter that arena with a gun in your hand, you contaminate the situation and set the stage for a tragic, mistaken identity shooting like this one!
Case Seven was not an isolated situation. Case Eight, in 2008, was somewhat similar. Homeowner both calls the cops and goes looking for the bad guy. While cops are en route, he finds the bad guy, and has to shoot him down in self-defense. Pretty clear-cut. Should have been clear sailing.
Until…
Cops arrive. They enter the home, guns drawn, shouting “Police!” The good guy turns toward the cops with gun in hand. Where the head goes, the body follows. The cops now reasonably perceive him to be swinging on them with a gun pointed in their direction.
They shoot. He falls. Another sad chapter is written in the history of Bad Tactics.
There are bad tactics, and there is bad selection of equipment. Some would say that the two overlap. I’ll leave that judgment up to you.
Historically, conventional wisdom has said that a shotgun is the best home defense weapon, superior to a handgun because of its greater stopping power. If you don’t think that hasn’t come back to haunt armed citizens, you haven’t read the details of the landmark 2008 US Supreme Court’s Heller decision.
